The story of origin of thithis:
The sun and the moon were doing their work. But then the moon started weakening and not doing its job properly. Because of this, the animals and plants on earth felt very tired as they were not getting the required energy from the moon. Knowing this Lord Shiva spoke to the moon and said that this is not good. Then Chandran explains that he is tired of his work and needs to take a break. He said that if he did not rest sometimes, he could not do his work properly. He allowed Chandran to rest while working. Chandran also appointed some people to ensure that he was doing his job properly. These special people were called Tithis.
The moon was believed to bring good luck in the waxing moon and bad luck in the waxing moon.Pournami Tithi was the task of observing the moon and making sure it did its work for a whole day. The job was to ensure that the moon would get a break for a whole day on Amavasai Tithi. The other 14 didis were sad because they had to do their work for two days.Knowing all their worries, Lord Shiva said, “You who oversee the moon's activities are called Tithis. Your name must also be recited while doing sangalpam for all good deeds. You will also be important in determining the periodical account. By that you will have great value in the world.''
Lord Shiva's Curse:
It is during this period that the people of the world use the days of Ashtami and Navami for the decade. The reason is that when Lord Shiva explained the duties and honors of Tithi, Ashtami and Navami Tithi were overlooked. Seeing their indifference, Lord Shiva cursed, "Because you disobey my words, they will separate you two. They will not perform auspicious events in your days."
