The story of origin of thithis:
The sun and the moon were doing their work. But then the moon started weakening and not doing its job properly. Knowing this Lord Shiva spoke to the moon and said that this is not good.Then Chandran explains that he is tired of his work and needs to take a break. The job was to ensure that the moon would get a break for a whole day on Amavasai Tithi. The other 14 didis were sad because they had to do their work for two days.Knowing all their worries, Lord Shiva said, “You who oversee the moon's activities are called Tithis. Your name must also be recited while doing sangalpam for all good deeds. You will also be important in determining the periodical account. By that you will have great value in the world.''
Lord Shiva's Curse:
It is during this period that the people of the world use the days of Ashtami and Navami for the decade. The reason is that when Lord Shiva explained the duties and honors of Tithi, Ashtami and Navami Tithi were overlooked. Seeing their indifference, Lord Shiva cursed, "Because you disobey my words, they will separate you two. They will not perform auspicious events in your days."
Birth Story of Gokulashtami and Rama Navami:
Ashtami and Navami regret their mistake. They apologized to Lord Shiva.
